Athletics in Papua New Guinea began developing through schools and colonial-era sporting competitions, became formally founded in 1961, was affiliated to the International Association of Athletics Federations in 1962, and established itself as one of Papua New Guinea’s leading sports. From Edward Laboran’s historic high jump Gold in 1963 through generations of successful male and female athletes, athletics has played an important role in Papua New Guinea’s sporting identity and international representation.
